Readers Digest [Nov 2009]

A monthly magazine with anecdotes, jokes, words of wisdom, which is best suited and preferred by all sections of society irrespective of their age. It comes out all over the world. It's famous because it's small (around half the size of a normal mag), and contains a real mix of articles broadly typified as 'general interest'.
The best thing about them is there is so much to read. They have a lot of pages and are very compact. There are so many different articles that you have a LOT to read. The articles are often true life stories (of all types) and short stories. There is a lot of emphasis on text and not much on pictures, which again is something I like. In terms of time and value for money, there's a lot of content. The mag is written by all sorts of different authors, so you get a good mix of styles and vocabulary which keeps it fresh and interesting.

Barack Obama: The Voice of an American Leader

Barack Obama: The Voice of an American Leader By Joann F.Price
This book offers a revealing look at Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee for the 2008 presidency, from the perspective of quotations by and about Obama on his heritage and family, state and national politics, his run for the presidency, the issues of the day, community activism and service, and thoughts on race and faith.

Product Description :
By any measure, the 2008 presidential race has been historic. The race has created an enthusiasm and a high degree of interest in politics few have ever seen before. At the center of the race is Barack Obama, the first African American to become the presumptive Democratic nominee. Many Americans agree with his politics, and many don't, but most agree he is an incredible force in today's highly-charged political world, and has come along at one of the most crucial, difficult times in our nation's history. For a sense of what has transpired in this campaign and how it is different from others in America's history, this book looks at one candidate from the perspective of quotations, made by and about Barack Obama.

Thematically arranged chapter highlight topics including Obama's heritage, his family, state and national politics, his run for the presidency, the issues of the day, community activism and service, and thoughts on race and faith. Each chapter contains an introduction and many of the quotations are supported with background information to give students and general readers a better understanding of the current events and political issues at play. Ideal for student assignments as well as for reading cover to cover, this volume offers the most representative, revealing, and often controversial quotes by and about a man who has created a movement in American politics.

Web Designing by W3Schools

W3Schools

Well, of all the places on the internet today, this is still one of the strongest going sites. It is also one of the most properly done sites, and for a good reason: They not only teach the proper standards so that you learn the Right Way, rather than the quick and messy way, but they use W3 standards, and have won numerous awards for their site (which incidentally gets an average of 1,000,000 hits per day).

Also, W3Schools.com does not just offer free education on HTML programming. They are the ultimate webmasters resource because the teach all of the major components of web design and development. The full list would be quite a long one, and you can see it on their site navigation bar, but I will say that finding a site that teaches HTML, XHTML, CSS, ASP, XSL, SOAP, SQL, PHP, and many many more technologies... all in one place... absolutely amazing and a resource that should be supported in every way (I would encourage you to click on some ads while you are there, just to help them out;).

This site is incredibly useful, highly organized, follows strict standards of development, and is Free!

RÁMÁYAN OF VÁLMÍKI

RÁMÁYAN OF VÁLMÍKI By Ralph T.H. Griffith

This is the first complete public domain translation of the Ramayana to be placed online. The Ramayana is one of the two epic Hindu poems, the other being the Mahabharata. The Ramayana describes a love story between Rama, an ancient King, and Sita, who is captured by Ravan, the King of Ceylon. Rama lays siege to Ceylon and wins back Sita. The parallels to the Iliad are obvious, but the details are very
different.
This verse translation by Griffith, whose translations of the Rig Veda and the Sama Veda are also available at sacred-texts, was scanned in 2000 from an original copy, which had very poor typesetting. Due to the difficulty of converting this 600 page text to etext, the project was put on hold for several years until OCR technology matured. Finally in 2003, the text was OCR-ed and proofed at Distributed Proofing. However, despite best efforts, there are several places in this text where the proofing was difficult or impossible. These are indicated by asterisks or (illegible). We are in the process of cleaning up these issues and hope to have a definitive version of this text at some point. In the meantime we hope you enjoy this epic, which is one of the most popular tales of Indian mythology.

Word Power Made Easy

Word Power Made Easy By Norman Lewis

A great concept by Norman Lewis. This book is excellently written for improvement of vocabulary and grammar. The mechanism of the book is the easiest of all that one can find.
The book is divided parts, each part is divided into chapters and each chapter is divided into sessions. Now, each chapter begins with a session containing 10 basic words with detailed explanations for easy memorization. After you memorize the 10 words, you proceed to the next sessions of the chapter in which the 10 words are broken down into the root words. Now, from each root word, number of other words which are built on the same root word are explained briefly and clearly. So, this mechanism allows you to memorize more than 100 words from 10 basic words.
Further, the book has ''Review'' and ''Test Your Learning'' sessions through which you can never forget the words you have learnt.
Further, the book is written in so simple language that even a child can read it very easily.
The book is easy to avail and is much cheaper than any other books of the similiar category.

Programming Sudoku

Programming Sudoku By Wei-Meng Lee

"Programming Sudoku" provides great approaches to building and solving Sudoku and other similar puzzles. Using ingenious artificial intelligence and game theory techniques, readers learn how to get a computer to solve these puzzles for them.

I was fascinated with Wei-Meng Lees book on Sudoku programming. My interest stemmed from the subject matter, Sudoku, and the way in which Wei-Meng Lee structured his book. -- Thomas Wagner, wagnerblog.com

Sudoku is the wildly popular new puzzle game. Sudoku puzzles are 9x9 grids, and each square in the grid consists of a 3x3 subgrid called a region. Your goal is to fill in the squares so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. And some squares already contain numbers or symbols, which lend clues toward the solution.

"Programming Sudoku" provides you with great approaches to building and solving Sudoku and other similar puzzles. Using ingenious artificial intelligence and game theory techniques, you'll learn how to get a computer to solve these puzzles for you.

This is a fun, intriguing read whether you're a novice or advanced programmer. It acknowledges the.NET platform as a base, but you'll find this book interesting whatever your programming background. The core techniques in the book enable you to solve Sudoku on any programming platform.

Operating system

Operating Systems by Abraham Silberchatz,Peter Baer Galvin,Greg Gagne

Operating systems are large and complex, and yet must function with near-absolute reliability--that's why they're a class unto themselves in the field of software development. Since its first release 20 years ago, "the dinosaur book"--Operating System Concepts by Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, and Greg Gagne--has been a valuable reference for designers and implementers of operating systems. The newly released sixth edition of this book maintains the volume's authority with new sections on thread management, distributed processes, and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). There's also information on the workings of the latest crop of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, Linux, FreeBSD, and compact operating systems for handheld devices.

This book is concerned with the design of operating systems, which is to say it enumerates the problems that pop up in the creation of efficient systems and explores alternative ways of dealing with them, detailing the advantages and shortcomings of each. For example, in their chapter on scheduling CPU activity, the authors explain several algorithms (first-come, first-served, and round-robin scheduling, among others) for allocating the capacity of single and multiple processors among jobs. They highlight the relative advantages of each, and explain how several real-life operating systems solve the problem. They then present the reader with exercises (this book is essentially a university textbook) that inspire thought and discussion. --David Wall

Topics covered: The problems faced by designers of system software for electronic computers, and strategies that have been developed over the past 20 years to address (and, in some cases, solve) them. Problems of CPU scheduling, memory allocation, paging, processes and threads, storage management, distributed processes and storage mechanisms, and security are all discussed thoroughly and with many authoritative references. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
This book provides a clear description of the concepts that underlie operating systems. In this book, the authors do not concentrate on any particular operating system or hardware. Instead, they discuss fundamental concepts that are applicable to a variety of systems. The book presents a large number of examples that pertain specifically to UNIX and to other popular operating systems.

Data Structures And Algorithm Analysis

Data Structures And Algorithm Analysis By Mark Allen Weiss

In this book describes data structures, methods of organizing large amounts of data, and algorithm analysis, the estimation of the running time of algorithms. As computers become faster and faster, the need for programs that can handle large amounts of input becomes more acute. Paradoxically, this requires more careful attention to efficiency, since inefficiencies in programs become most obvious when input sizes are large. By analyzing an algorithm before it is actually coded, students can decide if a particular solution will be feasible. For example, in this text students look at specific problems and see how careful implementations can reduce the time constraint for large amounts of data from 16 years to less than a second. Therefore, no algorithm or data structure is presented without an explanation of its running time. In some cases, minute details that affect the running time of the implementation are explored.

Once a solution method is determined, a program must still be written. As computers have become more powerful, the problems they solve have become larger and more complex, thus requiring development of more intricate programs to solve the problems. The goal of this text is to teach students good programming and algorithm analysis skills simultaneously so that they can develop such programs with the maximum amount of efficiency.

This book is suitable for either an advanced data structures (CS7) course or a first-year graduate course in algorithm analysis. Students should have some knowledge of intermediate programming, including such topics as pointers and recursion, and some background in discrete math.

Computer Networks

Computer Netwoks By Andrew S.Tanenbaum
The world's leading introduction to networking--fully updated for tomorrow's key technologies
Computer Networks, fourth edition, is the ideal introduction to today's networks--and tomorrow's. This classic bestseller has been thoroughly updated to reflect the newest and most important networking technologies with a special emphasis on wireless networking, including 802.11, Bluetooth'", broadband wireless, ad hoc networks, i-mode, and WAP. But fixed networks have not been ignored either, with coverage of ADSL, Internet over cable, gigabit Ethernet, peer-to-peer networks, NAT, and MPLS. And there is lots of new material on applications, including over 60 pages on the Web, plus Internet radio, Voice over IP, and video on demand. Finally, the coverage of network security has been revised and expanded to fill an entire chapter.
Author, educator, and researcher Andrew S. Tanenbaum, winner of the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, carefully explains how networks work on the inside, from underlying hardware at the physical layer up through the top-level application layer. Tanenbanm covers all this and more:
· Physical layer (e.g., copper, fiber, wireless, satellites, and Internet over cable)
· Data link layer (e.g., protocol principles, protocol verification, HDLC, and PPP)
· MAC sublayer (e.g., gigabit Ethernet, 802.11, broadband wireless, and switching)
· Network layer (e.g., routing algorithms, congestion control, QoS, IPv4, and IPv6)
· Transport layer (e.g., socket programming, UDP, TCP, RTP, and network performance)
· Application layer (e.g., e-mail, the Web, PHP, wireless Web, MP3, and streaming audio)
· Network security (e.g., AES, RSA, quantum cryptography, IPsec, and Web security)
The book gives detailed descriptions of the principles associated with each layer and presents many examples drawn from the Internet and wireless networks.
